It may still be summer and hot, but fall is just around the corner and it's time to start planning your family photo session!

Fall is the most popular time of year for MANY good reasons. It's not quite as hot out, the holidays are just around the corner, and it's absolutely BEAUTIFUL. I love every season, but the colors of fall speak to my heart in a special way and as a photographer in the Colorado Springs area, some of my absolute favorite sessions are ones that take place surrounded by trees in all of their autumn splendor! There are so many great places to go in and around Colorado Springs for stunning color, and I can help you find the best one when you book me for your session this year.

This post, however, focuses on styling for your session! I absolutely love helping my clients style themselves, whether using their own clothing or including items from the EGP Client Closet - which just happens to be chock-full of the most perfect autumn attire!

Tip #1: Avoid being overly matchy.

You don't want to dress everyone in the same exact outfit, colors, and style. When you do this, everyone tends to blend together and it gives the impression of "floating heads" in the pictures. Sure, it can be cute to have everyone matching at times - save that for your holiday pajamas! Take your style up several notches and create classy, timeless photos you'll LOVE having on your walls by choosing complementary colors (2-3) and mixing solid colors with a different texture or gentle pattern (avoid large, loud patterns though!). Avoid having every person in pants - have the girls in skirts or dresses and the guys in pants, or mix it up a bit however you'd like!

Tip #2: Stick to mostly neutral colors.

For the most part, wearing neutrals is going to look best in your photos. Neutrals in this case are colors like gray, tan, khaki, cream, or white (avoid stark white though as it's usually too bright in photos). You are going to be surrounded by lots of bold color if you do photos among the fall trees, so wearing these light neutrals are going to make you POP out against the background - which is what you want!

Another great option this time of year is to mix those light neutrals with jewel tones - maroon, navy, forest green, plum, dark oranges. These color tones are great this time of year, pair great with neutrals, and will not affect your skin tone the way bright colors will. I recommend only having about 1/3 of your group in a jewel tone and the rest in neutrals as these are very strong colors! And as a light and airy photographer, the lighter colors will brighten up your photos - the darker jewel tones will darken your photos.

Tip #3: Accessorize!

Add interest and style to your look! Add a cute scarf, or wear a wide-brimmed felt hat. Sport a long pearl necklace against your autumn jewel tones. Gold-hued jewelry will look great in the fall - add some gold teardrop or hoop earrings to your look! A cute plaid head band or hair band is a great way to add a little beloved plaid to your look without wearing casual flannel. Add a belt to your dress for a boho, slimming look. If you choose a larger necklace, wear daintier earrings; if your earrings are larger or longer, wear a more dainty necklace. It's all about balance!

Bonus Tip: Dress for the season!

No matter the temperature, there are some adorable fall looks that just don't go out of style. Even if the temperatures are stubbornly refusing to drop as they sometimes do in Colorado in the fall, add cozy, textured knit leggings under a skirt with boots, or wear a long dress with a scarf. If you're opting for pants, choose a skinnier style and wear tall boots with plaid boot socks to complete the look. If your dress or shirt is short-sleeved, add a cardigan or extra large scarf to hint at the turning of the season to come!
